The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is internationally celebrated as the official kick-off to the holiday season, known for its spectacular floats, massive helium balloons, talented high school and college marching bands, specialty youth performers, and star-studded appearances from TV, film, and music icons. The parade is broadcast live across the country on NBC.
Since its inception in 1924, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has grown into an American tradition. Originally organized by Macy’s employees, many of whom were proud first-generation immigrants, the parade celebrated their new American heritage with a vibrant, European-inspired festival. Starting in Harlem and ending at Macy’s flagship store, the event featured floats, marching bands, and live animals from the Central Park Zoo. In 1927, large helium balloons debuted, with Felix the Cat leading the way. The parade became a cultural icon after its prominent feature in the 1947 classic film Miracle on 34th Street.
For die-hard parade fans, Macy’s Giant Balloon Inflation, open to the public the day before Thanksgiving, offers an unforgettable opportunity to see the iconic balloons up close!
