Have you noticed an increase in online donations lately?
As our lives become more and more intertwined with technology (employee microchipping, anyone?), the way we support charity is no exception.
New research confirms a recent spike in online giving. In fact, while total giving increased just 1 percent in 2016, online giving jumped nearly 8 percent! With 62 percent of all donors preferring to give online, how is your nonprofit capitalizing on the trend?
Below we’ve curated must-read statistics on online giving in 2017, plus 3 quick steps for nonprofits to capture more online gifts.
3 Quick Tips to Snag More Online Donations
Getting more online donations boils down to two main steps. First, understand the behavior of your online visitors. What can motivate or impact them to take action for your cause? Then, whatever you do, don’t keep doing the same things over and over again and expect improved results.
Let’s look more in-depth at a few of the strategies discussed above, along with additional resources you can use to learn more.
1. Use branded landing pages.
We discussed the importance of branded giving pages in a recent post, but it’s worth emphasizing: Optimize your donation pages to encourage giving, particularly monthly or recurring gifts. Consistency in the logo, mission statements, statistics and other design elements help you create a more unified, memorable and ultimately more trustworthy web presence.

2. Start planning for #GivingTuesday.
It’s well known that people support causes more during the holiday season than any other time of the year. Year-end giving starts with #GivingTuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving where people worldwide are encouraged to step away from the shopping frenzy and give back instead.
It’s never too early to start planning for #GivingTuesday, so check out the popular Winspire News article below for a beginner’s guide on setting up a landing page and #GivingTuesday campaign.

3. Emphasize year-end giving.
#GivingTuesday is just one piece of a general year-end giving campaign. As noted in the infographic, not only was 19 percent of all 2015 giving made in December alone, the average size of donations made on December 31st was double that of gifts made during the rest of the entire year!
To make the most of year-end giving, it’s important that constituents can give in every method they choose: online, cash or check, and especially mobile device in 2017.
